Our Coaches and Staff

Ed Warren
Owner / Coach
Ed attended Western Carolina University where he was a member of the Catamount baseball team which won multiple Southern Conference Championships and NCAA Regional appearances in the mid-1980's.

After his playing days were done, he put his degree in Sport Management and Marketing to use as the founder and owner of Varsity Performance Group and the Carolina Yard Dogs Baseball Program. The mission is simple, develop players through collegiate style practices and challenging competition.
Windell Robertson
Director of Baseball / Coach
Coach Robertson is the head baseball coach at Charlotte's Mallard Creek High School. His valuable experience as 15-year member of the UNC Tarheel Baseball Camp Staff, 30+ years in the high school coaching ranks, owner of Robertson Athletic Instruction, and successful teacher with countless athletes that have gone on to play in the collegiate and professional ranks, helps separate the baseball instruction provided by the Yard Dogs from that of any other program in the region.
Alex Hill
Led NC high school hitters in 2007 with .667 batting average his senior season. Holds state career batting average record (.561) ... Four-time All-MECA 6 conference selection ... All-State his senior season.

Alex was a four year starter for the UNC Wilmington Seahawks baseball program. Recorded a .474 slugging percentage in 44 games as a freshman. By the end of his college career, Alex had played in over 165 games during his time in Wilmington.
Grayson Butler
Grayson enjoyed a successfull high school playing career with one of North Carolina's top programs at Hough High School. After graduating, Coach Butler attended college at Anderson University where he was a member of their pitching staff. Gray has returned to Charlotte to pursue his passion for coaching as a member of the Mallard Creek Staff and the Yard Dogs.
James Creel
James Creel played baseball and graduated from Rabun Gap Nacoochee High School in Rabun Gap, Georgia. After graduation, James attended Wake Tech in Raleigh NC, where he was a catcher for the Eagles Baseball team.

James has become a key figure in the dugout with the Yard Dogs. He currently coaches baseball at Lake Norman Charter Middle School. James comes to the field with a contagious enthusiasm and knowledge for the game which motivates athletes.
Tim Mansfield
Tim Mansfield is currently the Mallard Creek High School Junior Varsity Head Coach and Assistant Head Coach with the Varsity Program.

Coach Mansfield has been working with the Yard Dogs Prospects program participating in regional league play designed to help develop high school baseball players. His role as head coach for our prospect program puts Coach Mansfield in a position critical to the long term success of the Yard Dogs Program.
Edward Warren
Asst. Coach
Current member of the Guilford Tech Titan pitching staff, where he led the team in Saves his freshman season. During the summer as a member of the Mooresville Spinners, Warren set the single season record for Saves, lead the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League in mound appearances and Saved Games. He was selected to the 2017 CVCL All-Star Team with a 1.77 ERA and .173 BAA

Warren is acting as a part-time volunteer coach.
